Black Rose Hips

The wild Burnet Rose can be found growing on sand dunes round the coast of the British Isles.

A characteristic unique among wild roses are its purple-black hips.
Other wild roses have red or orange fruits .....

Leaves and hips, which have a distinct aromatic flavour, can be used to make Burnet Rose Tea
and Danish Burnet Rose Schnapps ......

The stems have a very large number of thorns resembling barbed wire .....

In summer the flowers are creamy white .....

Sometimes splashed with pink .....

Gulls waiting on the shore line .....

Pink Dog Rose and scarlet hips.
A powerful medicinal plant - syrup made from the fruit is rich in vitamin C .....

The name Dog Rose is thought to have been coined by the ancient Greeks, who believed the roots
could cure someone bitten by a mad dog. Later adopted by the Romans, "Rosa Canina" was subsequently translated directly into English .....

Thank you for visiting

  5. Dear Ruby - The Burnet Rose delighted me with its dramatic change from the pure white maidens to the matured dark purple ladies. Both flowers and hips look so impressive.

  9. Hello!:) Wonderful photography of my favourite flowers, even the wild rose is really pretty. We have a number of Dog Roses on the farm, but I never knew the origin of it's name, until I read it here. Lovely shot of the gulls too.

  18. We have roses along a stairway from a parking lot down to the marina near our home. The flower are beautiful in summer and the rose hips give the birds something to chew on in winter. - Margy

  20. These black rose hips are amazing, I don't think I've seen them before. The blackberries or brambles are all out now, complete with thorns, I've garnered quite a few lately, the colour they leave your fingers is great, dark purple stains. The thorns are not so great though!

  21. I have always loved the look of "ordinary" rose hips, but oh my goodness those black ones are stunning! And completely new to me...what a marvelous rose bush ... beautiful in all stages. The other one is lovely too of course ..... I really lik how you put this post together, showing the bushes in bloom and in the last stage.

  22. Hi,Ruby. It's nice you can enjoy two times, one is for watching and another is for a drinking of rose hip tea. Generally speaking, the black color fruits are tasteful more than pink color ones. Thanks for sharing.
