Fired Clay
While walking on a nearby beach,I came across this interesting amalgamation of stone and brick held together by fired clay or cement. My guess is that it is a remnant of discarded material from the former brick works at Preston Pans. The rough local clay was fired to very high temperatures bringing out a variety of vibrant earthy shades, from orange to purple. Sadly this beauty, from an aesthetic viewpoint, was all too often hidden behind surface render or in drains and sewers.

Amazing what we have in this world. Great piece. The photo is just great. Have a wonderful day and thanks.
ReplyDeleteDon't we just! And thanks to blogging I now spend even more time observing our world.
DeleteA hidden treasure unearthed. Good that it surfaced to see the light of day in your hands and our eyes and be appreciated for its rough beauty.
ReplyDeleteI love to think that this piece may have spent years at the bottom of the sea waiting to move with the currents and tides.
DeleteThe colours are sublime - such strange histories lurk in stones and fired stones and how they are worked and put together - and then discarded on a beach, to be found and given another life of a kind, by you, viewed by many....
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out this blog was not coming up on my list. I assumed you had not written anything on it for a while, don't know why it was not working, had to jiggle about a bit, but it's working now. And thanks for your dervish comment! I'm still whirling it seems, good energy...
M xx
M, strange histories must lurk in stones everywhere, fascinating to think about it. I may explore the history of this clay later.
DeleteFor me, they look miserable and miraculous reminders.....hope they come alive by your art!
