Black Rose Hips

The wild Burnet Rose can be found growing on sand dunes round the coast of the British Isles.

A characteristic unique among wild roses are its purple-black hips.
Other wild roses have red or orange fruits .....

Leaves and hips, which have a distinct aromatic flavour, can be used to make Burnet Rose Tea
and Danish Burnet Rose Schnapps ......

The stems have a very large number of thorns resembling barbed wire .....

In summer the flowers are creamy white .....

Sometimes splashed with pink .....

Gulls waiting on the shore line .....


Pink Dog Rose and scarlet hips.
A powerful medicinal plant - syrup made from the fruit is rich in vitamin C .....

The name Dog Rose is thought to have been coined by the ancient Greeks,who believed the roots
could cure someone bitten by a mad dog. Later adopted by the Romans, "Rosa Canina" was subsequently translated directly into English .....

Healing Scabious

Wild Scabious were once used by herbalists to cure skin diseases,wounds, and even the plague.

A concoction was drunk as an infusion or applied externally as ointment .....

Bee collecting nectar on wild Scabious at the edge of a field ......

I prefer the delicate wild flowers to the also beautiful garden Scabious .....

Garden varieties are larger and come in various shades and colours .....
