Mermaid Lights

Mermaid Lights  ..........  the creation process .

Shells, collected on New Year's Day.

I started by gathering bark shavings, feathers, and coloured and metallic threads and allowed them to fall into place as naturally as possible to form a cushion for the shell lights.

For now I've improvised by cutting up candles, but later I may fill
the shells with candle wax .

Mermaid lights  -  completed.

Thank you for visiting  -  If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them .

  1. Hi Ruby, sounds like you're having a happy inspiring new year.
"Mermaid lights", what a lovely idea. Metallic threads look like a glint on the water. It would look more charming seen in the dark at night. Happy creative activity!

    1. Cosmos, I haven't yet worked out what lighting suits best because it's necessary to see the materials and threads clearly. This is a trial run and I intend to come back to it later.

  3. The lights are gorgeous - what a great idea to put candles on these lovely shells, with the shavings and coloured threads as background.

  6. Ruby, you came up with such a lovely idea of mermaid lights! Short cut candles standing on the shells are charming.
I wonder how you lit after cutting up the snuff inside the candles. You have a great technique!

My 2013 started yesterday after spending time with my extended family here in Nara and visiting my mother in Tokyo.

    1. Tomoko, this peice really made itself! One end of the cut section was pared down to expose more wick then burnt for a short time until all mini candles were of a similar size.

Your life sounds very busy Tomoko.
      Best wishes for 2013!
